Yoga Alliance and RYT 200: What Do They Mean?

Understand school certificates, RYS 200 and your own RYT 200 registration. Check official requirements and the questions to ask before choosing a yoga school.

Yoga Bible

RYS 200 describes a school with a registered 200-hour programme at Yoga Alliance. RYT 200 describes a personally registered teacher. Completing training and receiving the school’s certificate is therefore a separate step from applying for your own registration.

The terms often appear together on course pages. This can make a training certificate, school registration and personal membership sound like one arrangement. When assessing a course, ask who issues each document and which action you need to take after graduation.

A short guide to the terminology

TermWhat it describes
School completion certificateDocuments the training you completed
RYS 200Registered Yoga School at the 200-hour level
RYT 200Registered Yoga Teacher at the 200-hour level
MembershipYour individual relationship with ongoing requirements

These distinctions follow Yoga Alliance’s school credential overview and teacher registration pathway. Read a school’s marketing alongside the organisation’s current rules.

What happens after training?

The organisation’s official standards require one complete 200-hour training at an RYS 200 for RYT 200. Shorter courses cannot be combined to satisfy that requirement. No subsequent teaching hours are required for registration at this level.

Your individual application follows completion. Yoga Alliance describes submitting a training certificate and making a payment separately from tuition. Check current fees and membership conditions directly with the organisation; we do not give a fixed Danish price for that separate payment.

What to check with the school

Yoga Bible’s current 200-hour programme page describes the school as RYS 200. If personal registration matters to your decision, request the specific school profile and the programme name that will appear on your completion certificate. Check the details in Yoga Alliance’s school directory.

  • Under which name is the school registered?
  • Which programme and cohort dates will appear on my certificate?
  • Which attendance requirements, assignments and assessments must I complete?
  • How do I receive the certificate after graduation?
  • Which steps do I take myself if I want personal registration?

Keep the answers with your timetable and payment agreement. Where a school has changed its name, clarify the relationship between the enrolment name and the information on the certificate. A precise explanation will help you locate the right documents later.

A clear training choice explains what the school documents and what you need to apply for yourself.

What does a credential tell you about teaching?

Treat registration as one part of your investigation. You still need to consider the trainers’ relevant experience, how feedback works and how often you practise instructing. Courses can share a designation while organising the learning differently.

Imagine choosing between two suitable schools. Make one page for each with the actual teaching dates, assignment examples and feedback process. Add registration details as a separate field. This editorial comparison method helps you examine the learning alongside the credential.

Ask a venue where you hope to teach which qualifications it expects too. A designation alone cannot determine whether your sample class or approach fits its participants. Be prepared to explain what you have learned and what you are still developing.

For your own records, keep a copy of the final certificate and a simple list of the topics you studied. If you later apply for a teaching opportunity, this gives you a concrete basis for describing your training without suggesting expertise beyond the course you completed.

Three questions about credentials

Do I automatically become RYT 200 after training?

No. Your school certificate and personal Yoga Alliance application are separate steps. Follow the organisation’s current process if you want registration.

Can a collection of workshops count as RYT 200?

Yoga Alliance’s standards describe one complete 200-hour training. Investigate workshops as further learning and clarify their documentation separately.

Does registration guarantee a teaching job?

No. A venue also considers experience, sample teaching, audience and collaboration. Registration may form part of its requirements, but is not an employment agreement.
