Yin Training or 200 Hours: Which Should You Choose?

Yin training or a 200-hour foundation? Compare goals, syllabus, teaching practice and certificates to choose the route that fits your experience and plans.

Yin training and a 200-hour yoga teacher training answer different needs. A focused Yin course can deepen your understanding of one style. A 200-hour foundation offers a broader structure for practice, anatomy, philosophy and teaching method. If you have not taught before, ask whether you want to study one format closely or build a general teaching foundation first.

What are you comparing?

“Yin training” can refer to a weekend workshop, a course over several weeks or a specialisation for existing teachers. Hours, entry requirements and certificates vary by provider. Ask to see the actual syllabus and assessment before comparing prices. The word training alone does not tell you what qualification you will receive.

Yoga Bible's 200-hour overview describes a programme covering several styles, including Yin. You encounter Yin alongside Hatha, Vinyasa, Hot Yoga and meditation. This article does not advertise a standalone Yin certificate. If time spent on Yin will determine your decision, request the current teaching plan for the cohort you are considering.

Three routes based on your goal

  • You want Yin for personal practice: Begin with regular Yin classes and perhaps a focused course. Notice the pace, language and options a teacher offers.
  • You want to start teaching yoga broadly: Consider a foundation course with practice teaching and feedback on complete classes. Yin becomes one of several styles you can place in a purposeful sequence.
  • You already teach and want a specialism: Choose a Yin course that clearly describes its audience, teaching hours, supervision and assessment. Compare that scope with what you can already do.

Imagine two learners. One wants a calmer weekly personal practice. A 200-hour programme may ask for more time and money than their goal requires. The other wants to teach both dynamic and quiet classes and receive feedback on their instruction. A broader foundation may suit them better. Neither decision can be made from the course title alone.

Questions before paying

Ask for a written outline of teaching hours, faculty, student practice, feedback, absence policy and the document issued at completion. Also ask whether a Yoga Alliance designation belongs to the school, programme or your own registration. Yoga Alliance describes RYS 200 as foundation training and RYS 300 as advanced training; a specialist workshop is not automatically either one.

Read more about Yin as a yoga style and what 200 hours covers. They can help you compare subject matter and commitment before you select a format.

Choose for the work you want to be able to do afterwards and the amount of supervised teaching you will actually receive.

A useful comparison sheet includes practical details as well as course content. Note whether individual feedback is available, how often you teach others and whether the timetable fits your week. A course you cannot reliably attend may be a poor choice even when its subject sounds exactly right.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Yin component of 200 hours give a separate Yin certificate?

Do not assume so. Ask the school to confirm exactly which completion document your particular programme issues.

Must I take 200 hours before any Yin workshop?

Not necessarily. A workshop for personal practice may have different entry requirements from continuing training for teachers. Check the provider's description.

Can I teach Yin after a 200-hour programme?

You are responsible for teaching within what you have studied and practised. Ask how much Yin practice and feedback your cohort includes, and seek more guidance if you want to specialise.
